During the New Year celebrations in Shanghai, at least 36 people were killed and 47 others injured in a stampede when the people were in a rush to grab the fake money thrown from a building nearby.

Several people had gathered to celebrate New Year in the city of Shanghai in the waterfront area. The large scale 3D laser display was cancelled a week ago due to safety concerns. State media and witnesses said that the incident at Chen Yi Square was caused by people when they scrambled for coupons but looking like dollar bills being thrown out of the window of a bar.
The bar was located on the third floor of a building opposite the Bund. A man who helped bring one of the victims to the local hospital said that the fake money was thrown from the bar and it was part of the New Year celebrations. The stampede was triggered after people saw that money was being thrown. Several of the dead and injured were students including 28 women who were dead.
The incident happened approximately half an hour before midnight and the pictures of the incident were also published by Xinhua and also on social media outlets with several people lying on the floor and rescuers trying to revive the injured people while the police were seen making efforts to bring order.
State television reported that the people in the scene said that the fake money was made to descend down like snow. “It’s too cruel. People in front of us had already fallen to the floor, and others were stepping all over them”, said one of the onlookers. Shanghai Daily also reported that the incident took place close to the area where the large laser display was planned to have been placed.
