Gap announced that it has plans to open 40 outlets in the country in partnership with Arvind Lifestyle Brand which is a subsidiary of Arvind Limited. The move comes as part of its global expansion strategy. The first two outlets will be opened in Mumbai and Delhi by next year with a collection of clothes for adults, kids and babies most of it being the summer collection of the retailer.

In its statement, Gap said that it considers its Indian expansion as an ‘important next step’ as it sees India as a growing market. “India is an emerging, vibrant market and an important next step in our global expansion strategy,” said Steve Sunnucks, Gap Global President.

Vice President Ismail Seyis said, “More than half of India’s population is under 25 and they are actively embracing fashion in today’s retail environment.” He also said that India is among the top ten global sourcing locations and the company is looking forward to having meaningful relationships with its sourcing partners.

However, this is not the first time Gap is setting its footprint in India as it has already launched the Personal Advancement & Career Enhancement program aka P. A. C. E which is a workplace education program it established in the country with one of its vendor in its two manufacturing units.

The programme aims to offer female employees the skills they need to improve their lifestyle and advance at work. However, it’s not only in India that its employee empowerment programme is conducted. It is a part of its initiatives in Asia to help companies become self-sustaining and not dependent on American companies.
