Peter Moores to support retaining Alastair Cook
After an overwhelmingly pressurized match, Alastair Cook and his team won the One Day International match against India, still standing at 3-1 and the first three failures put a lot of pressure on the team, especially on Alastair Cook.
A cricket committee is set up now to discuss if Alastair Cook can be allowed to stay as the captain of the team or if the position needs a replacement. Peter Moores, has been close to Cook for a long time and has showed support for Cook at several occasions before. He said that he would attend the meeting of the authorities and explain to them that Cook is the only person who can lead the team to victory.
England has very few days to practice before the World Cup next year and there are also several matches it has to face before entering the World Cup series. Moores said that questioning Cook’s ability as a cricketer is unjust. Moores said that him saying, ‘The England captain is this and this is our side’ because I am one of four selectors” would not be fair.
“I’m not hiding the fact that I think Alastair Cook has shown tremendous resolve and worked extremely hard with the young players coming in and I like the way he’s done that,” he added. If Cook were to be retained, one of his colleagues will have to be eliminated from the team and the axe might fall on Ian Bell or Gary Ballance, according to some sources. In the meantime, Ravi Bopara is expected to join the team on their tour to Sri Lanka and Jason Roy and Adil Rashid are also expected to join shortly.
Moores said that though he will support Cook strongly, he is not sure if he will be selected as they have to analyze what is right for the team and go for the best people as they are nearing the World Cup series.
