Putin starts another blame game
During a meeting at the Valdai Club in Sochi, Vladimir Putin blamed the US for the Islamist terrorist havocs and the position of Ukrainian war. Foreign journalists and experts from Russia took part in the meeting and Putin used the opportunity to express his opinion that the US government was responsible for the global problems going on currently and also for the unrest in Ukraine in addition to the terrorism in Iraq.
He said that the US has behaved like it is a “nouveau riche who had suddenly received a lot of wealth – in this case, global leadership”. He also added that the US has not made efforts to use its powers wisely but to create an unfair system which is also unilateral. Although he has accused Washington for several other global issues at various occasions, he delivered a speech focused on it this time. He seemed to express colder views on the reactions of the US on these matters than when the relationship between the two countries turned unpleasant after the cold war.
Putin said, “The exceptionalism of the United States, the way they implement their leadership, is it really a benefit? And their worldwide intervention brings peace and stability, progress and peak of democracy? Maybe we should relax and enjoy this splendour? No!”
The venue of the meeting was the Black Sea resort of Sochi. He was not asked many difficult questions this time. One notable statement was made by Peter Lavelle of the Kremlin’s Russia Today television channel who said that Putin was the most popular man in modern history and he is looked upon as a savior of sorts by a large part of the world. As always, Putin refused to accept that Russia has shown aggressive behavior towards Ukraine and also added that such claims are groundless.
